The Scanning Workbench from BRIT Systems is a high quality film digitization system for both PACS and teleradiology applications. The system is a DICOM Storage SCU: it transmits DICOM secondary capture images using a selection of transfer syntaxes (different DICOM compression algorithms). It also supports DICOM modality worklist and print clients, includes a DICOM viewer and supports an HL-7 interface. Used with a DICOM printer, the system can also be used as a film copier, providing superior copies than those produced by conventional methods. The same PC controller can also be used to run BRIT's Capture Workbench, which is a frame grab solution and a DICOM Storage SCP. By combining The Scanning and Capture Workbenches, a single computer and network connection can be used to transmit film, frame grabbed (DICOM secondary capture) images and DICOM images in a teleradiology application.
Each Scanning Workbench combines:
- Either a laser or CCD film digitizer
- A Windows NT based controller and front-end to the scanner
- A network connection: 10/100 Ethernet for local area networks; modems or ISDN for dial connections; modems, ISDN, xDSL or cable modems for use with Internet/VPN connections
- Optional multi-sheet feeder
- Optional barcode reader

All models of The Scanning Workbench meet the ACR guidelines for primary diagnosis. Models configured with the Lumiscan 85 produce images with resolution of 10 lp/mm (the produced images are viewable on any of BRIT's viewers), recommended for mammography research projects. The optional film feeder should be considered for heavy workloads. A special software /hardware configuration is available for heavy archival use that utilizes barcode readers, the HL-7 interface, barcode printers and large capacity film feeders.
