Hierarchial storage, migration and disaster recovery are all supported through the use of ADSM, IBM's key storage product. By interfacing with ADSM, The Roentgen Files can support a tremendous variety of storage devices, such as DLT tapes, linear optical tape and MOD optical. ADSM is also your assurance that as your selected storage technology ages, there will be a migration path from the old to the new media.

For high up-time environments, The Roentgen Files utilizes IBM's award winning HACMP (Highly Available Clustered Multi-Processors). With HACMP, the archive runs on a minimum of two computers that have a heart-beat running between them. If one computer fails, the workload from that computer fails over to another computer running in the cluster. Using this feature, most hardware and software upgrades can be done while the system remains operational.

All data enters the server via DICOM. The Roentgen File supports an extremely broad range of modalities and objects.* A relational database stores all the information about the exam. This automatically updates the web page. The exam data itself is stored on RAID exactly as it was received from the modality. Copying of the exam from short to long term storage happens either immediately or once a day, depending on your system configuration. Exam can be retrieved either through the web pages or using a wide range of DICOM services, such as query/retrieve and move. A selection of DICOM JPEG transfer syntaxes is also supported* for those DICOM viewers requiring compressed transmission. BRIT supplies both a helper application that runs on Windows platforms and system independent Java application for the viewing of images through the web server.

In an archive environment, The Roentgen File supports the pre-fetching of comparison exams from the long term archive to the short term disk. Pre-fetching is based on body-region, modality type and exam date. These downloaded exams can be pre-loaded to the viewer according to table driven rules.
